Convergence-Illuminating the Future of Lighting

Our lighting community may cease to exist in its current form as SSL is assimilated into other building products. Jeff Bezos said recently that he sells compact discs because some customers still prefer artifacts. The stand alone fixture and lamp model will be an artifact when lighting becomes an integrated component of the building architecture providing intuitive and adaptive light from flooring, walls, windows, desk surfaces and ceiling materials using communication signals, audio and video in some or all of these integrated solutions. Industries are aligning and trajectories are converging. What remains alarming is the velocity of change toward a strange new world facing both lighting professionals and users. This presentation analyzes the changes to energy, regulations, trends and technology that are positioned to dissolve our industry as we know it. With change comes opportunity but only for those who understand and can prepare.
